While a heartbreaking story, we know Cookie felt love her last days and wanted to share her story with the world so she's never forgotten as a wonderful part of our Rescue even for her short time with us.
We rescued a pair of dogs from the shelter this past weekend, one of whose name was Cookie. We were told she was 9. She was not. When we took her to the vet, we found out she was 17. Cookie was in very poor condition. Her nails were so long she had difficulty walking. Her tail was atrophied, her back legs beginning to do the same. Her mouth and what teeth she had left, were rotting. She was suffering from liver damage and many other issues.. She had limited sight and basically no hearing.
This poor old lady deserved some love, compassion and dignity at the end – and she received that but it should have been at the hands of her owners after all these years. She got her nails trimmed so she could walk without pain. When she was hungry, her foster would hold the bowl near her so she could eat. Her last few days on earth were spent sleeping on a soft bed in front of a fire before she crossed the rainbow bridge with her foster by her side.
Rescue can be very rewarding and at times it can literally shatter your heart into a million pieces. Your donations help us care for animals in need to make them healthy and have a second chance. And sometimes, your donations help the animals in need who just need a safe place to go in the last few days of their life. We never truly know what to expect when we rescue an animal, but are grateful we got to meet Cookie.
Cookie, we hope you are running free and your foster is blessed to have been a part of your life … even if only for three days.
